Head of the Hydrogen and Tritium Technologies Directorate
Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL)

Ian Castillo serves as the Head of the Hydrogen and Tritium Technologies Directorate for the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL). In this role, Dr. Castillo leads the strategic direction, capability development and execution of the research and development activities of the Directorate. This includes understanding various stakeholder needs with the government, assessing market trends and establishing a technology portfolio to leverage CNL’s decades of hydrogen isotopes experience in Canada and internationally, and uses CNL’s unique differentiating facilities and capabilities.  

Dr. Castillo obtained his Ph.D in Chemical Engineering, with a minor in Chemistry, from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Dr. Castillo is also an alumnus of the World Nuclear University – Summer Internship, the most prestigious nuclear leadership academy

Dr. Castillo has a wide experience in many aspects of the nuclear industry, having been involved for over 15 years in multi-disciplinary, multi-million dollars research projects from design to execution, such as the refurbishment of the new CNL's Tritium Facility, the revitalization of CNL’s R&D Analytical Chemistry infrastructure, and the refurbishment of new Hydrogen Laboratories.

Dr. Castillo is recognized as an expert in deployment of innovative technologies in the areas of hydrogen production, hydrogen recombination, heavy water and tritium management, chemistry, and process engineering. Dr. Castillo is currently the Task Force Lead for the Hydrogen Production Processes area in the Nuclear Working for implementing the Hydrogen Strategy for Canada. Dr. Castillo has also represented Canada at various Nuclear – Hydrogen forums at the International Atomic Energy Agency, in Vienna.
