Alstom’s Coradia Ilint, First Hydrogen Train in the Americas 

Alstom’s Coradia iLint hydrogen-powered train is the first train ever to carry passengers in the Americas. It carried more than 10,000 passengers in a demonstration project in the Province of Quebec from mid-June to the end of September 2023. This hydrogen fuel cell-powered train emits only water, produces its electricity through green hydrogen made from renewable resources in the province, and is designed for non or partially electrified lines. The iLint enables sustainable train operation while ensuring the highest levels of performance and comfort. This project sets the foundation for a comprehensive, safe, and efficient hydrogen ecosystem for the rail transportation sector in North America, including production, refueling and operation. 



Fleetpilot™ Tactical Fleet Refueling System

Truck and bus fleets need temporary, re-deployable and economical hydrogen fueling infrastructure to support early-market pilot programs of 5?10 vehicles. The FleetPilot™ is a self-contained refueling system that delivers high-performance, fast and complete J2601-compliant refueling of commercial vehicles, without compromise, even when filling back-to-back.    The FleetPilot can simply be placed on a concrete pad and connected to power, avoiding expensive site engineering and construction activities that typically account for 40% of the cost of a hydrogen station.  The FleetPilot can connect directly to gaseous hydrogen sources such as electrolysers, other onsite production processes, and delivered hydrogen from gas trailers which is left connected until depleted.  FleetPilot requires no additional expensive hydrogen ground storage.    The FleetPilot provides integrated point-of-sale with fleet card support, and includes extensive cloud-based management, monitoring and analytics.  The FleetPilot’s total capacity is right-sized for smaller initial fleet deployments, with a total capacity of 300 kg/day.  When the fleet eventually steps up to an extensive hydrogen vehicle rollout, the FleetPilot can be easily redeployed elsewhere to make way for a large-capacity permanent refueling station.


CPKC Hydrogen Freight Locomotive Program & Alberta Rail Terminal Decarbonization

CPKC has designed and converted the first of a kind, zero-emissions hydrogen fuel cell freight locomotives. Two of these locomotives are now in commercial operations between Calgary and Edmonton, with a third coming online this spring and additional conversions planned.

Hydrogen Microcredentials for Hydrogen-fueled Operations

As the energy sector examines the role that hydrogen plays as a tool to decarbonize global energy supplies, hydrogen awareness and training are a requisite to enable strategy, infrastructure development, and workforce upskilling.   Thanks to collaborative efforts with the Canadian Colleges for a Resilient Recovery (C2R2) coalition and wide industry engagement, two micro-credentials have been jointly developed by leading institutions across Canada:   - Mohawk College in Hamilton, ON  - Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary, AB  - Lambton College in Sarnia, ON  - Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) in Halifax, NS  - Holland College in Charlottetown, PEI     C2R2 comprises 14 colleges, cégeps, institutes, and polytechnics nationwide, all dedicated to sustainability and helping to prepare workers for the transition to hydrogen-fueled power for industrial processing. This innovative digital educational product, now launching through a web-based Learning Management System (LMS), offers valuable workforce upskilling to support learning and professional development of a pan-Canadian network of industry professionals.   The resulting micro-credentials, 'Hydrogen Awareness and Understanding for Process-Related Occupations' and 'Entry-Level Technical Applications in Hydrogen for Process Occupations,' cater to professionals across diverse industries ranging from manufacturing and energy to chemicals and transportation.    The 'Hydrogen Awareness and Understanding for Process-Related Occupations' micro-credential, involving 24 hours of study, equips learners with foundational knowledge of hydrogen. This includes an understanding of hydrogen properties, production methods, and safety aspects relevant to process occupations.    The 'Entry-Level Technical Applications in Hydrogen for Process Occupations' micro-credential offers a comprehensive 48-hour training program. It delves into the principles, applications, and challenges of hydrogen within industrial settings. Learners will also gain insights into effectively and safely integrating hydrogen into existing processes or developing new hydrogen-based processes.  These micro-credentials, accessible online, serve as vital tools for professionals looking to stay ahead in the dynamic energy landscape.

RuggedCell™ High-Power Water Electrolysis System

Hydrogen Optimized’s innovative high-power RuggedCell™ water electrolysis system provides low-cost clean hydrogen at the scale needed to decarbonize major, hard-to-abate industries. It is targeted to chemical and industrial applications such as ammonia plants; fleet mobility applications such as trucking; and energy and utility applications including natural gas blending.  The patented RuggedCell™ is unique among water electrolyzer systems for its unipolar architecture, which builds on the proven Stuart technology platform with new innovations in high-power electrolysis. Delphy by Vallourec (Underground Hydrogen Storage)

As the energy sector strives to decarbonize, hydrogen emerges as a key player in achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. While addressing the escalating global demand, the development of hydrogen infrastructure is imperative. The challenge lies in establishing large scale hydrogen storage, a critical piece to optimize production costs (CAPEX and OPEX) and ensure security and continuity of supply to hydrogen end-users. Delphy by Vallourec, presents an innovative solution, securely storing substantial hydrogen volumes underground, bridging the gap in addressing the critical infrastructure need of the hydrogen sector. Building on its experience with hydrogen storage, both at small scale (type I cylinders) and ultra-large scale (geological storage like salt caverns), Vallourec devised an innovative system allowing storage of 1 to 100 tons of hydrogen in gaseous form, while offering a superior safety profile and minimal surface footprint, both facilitating integration in hydrogen projects. The solution leverages our material expertise and advanced manufacturing capabilities. In essence, compressed hydrogen is stored within individual tubes or “strings” positioned in a purpose-built cavity beneath the surface. This innovative system enables a secure, low visibility, high-volume storage asset of up to 100 tons of hydrogen storage per cavity, all within a much smaller footprint than current offerings above ground. “A small footprint with a big impact”.

Enbridge Gas Inc.

Hydrogen Fueled Combined Heat and Power System at Enbridge’s Technology Operations Centre in Markham, Ontario

Enbridge Gas Inc. (Enbridge Gas) is Canada’s largest natural gas storage, transmission and distribution company based in Ontario, with more than 175 years of service to customers. Enbridge Gas is leading the energy transition to a clean energy future through net-zero emissions targets and investments in innovative low-carbon energy solutions.  We have set a goal to reduce the intensity of emissions in our own operations by 35 percent by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. As such, we have installed North America’s first 100 percent hydrogen fueled Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system at our Technology Operations Centre (TOC) in Markham, Ontario. The CHP system consists of a 115 kWe reciprocating engine, heat recovery devices and ancillary equipment supplied by 2G Energy Corp.  The engine is capable of running on any combination of hydrogen and natural gas from a 25 percent hydrogen/natural gas blend up to 100 percent hydrogen or 100 percent natural gas.  This project is designed to supply most of the electricity and hot water loads of the TOC’s main building. The CHP system has the potential to reduce GHG emissions by approximately 440 metric tonnes per year depending on the overall usage. The project will be a robust demonstration of how hydrogen fueled CHP systems could offer a reliable, emissions-reducing solution by producing clean electricity and heat while offsetting demand on Ontario’s electrical grid. This project can be applied to many sectors ranging from residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial sectors. The TOC was the ideal location to launch this exciting new pilot, as the hydrogen production infrastructure was already in place requiring only a short pipe run to connect, ensuring a steady delivery of hydrogen from the Enbridge’s Power-to-Gas facility to the CHP facility. The system will be fully operational in Q1, 2024. While this project may be small in scale, it is beneficial to creating a roadmap to support the net-zero goals that could be addressed with the deployment of hydrogen solutions. This project serves as a remarkable step towards adopting cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions. This project is supported by the financial contribution of the Independent Electricity System Operator through the Hydrogen Innovation Fund. The engineering services are provided by CEM Engineering based in St. Catherines, Ontario.

Gradient Thermal 100% Hydrogen syncFURNACE

Gradient Thermal Inc. (“Gradient”) is an innovator of the most efficient heating solutions.  A Calgary start-up, the flagship among Gradient’s proven product suite, syncFURNACE, combines both air and water heating into one single highly efficient combi-system for residential and small commercial applications.  In an effort to help advance Canada’s hydrogen economy, Gradient has converted the syncFURNACE from natural gas to be fuelled by 100% hydrogen (“H2”).  The technology demonstrates hydrogen heating is feasible for North American homes and provides innovation to inform and meet required safety and performance criteria for commercial adoption.  This technology creates H2 end-use demand, a critical piece in North America’s H2 value chain, providing the first essential end-user appliance fuelled entirely by H2.      Gradient has been advancing 100% H2 syncFURNACE research and development since 2021, reaching a milestone in 2024 installing prototype units in Alberta, representing a major step in the technology’s demonstrated readiness, making a 100% H2 syncFURNACE ready for a home installation.    Developed and manufactured in Alberta this innovation is a Canadian flagship in energy transition: a success story for company start-up and growth; employment opportunities as manufacturing scales and diversifies the Canadian economy; and, a proof point for industry that a complete H2 value-chain is viable. 

Spartan Controls Ltd.

SpartanPRO™ Hydrogen Blending & Injection Solutions

Spartan’s turnkey Hydrogen Blending and Injection Solutions are proven, field-tested process control applications that give Gas Distribution companies the confidence to accurately blend or inject hydrogen into their existing natural gas infrastructure with minimal effort or expense.   Our solutions use Rosemount’s XStream Thermal Conductivity analyzers to measure both the unblended natural gas, and the blended gas after hydrogen addition.  This approach allows the analyzer to eliminate the impacts of natural gas composition variability and provides the most robust, reliable measurement possible.  The solutions also implement feedback control based on the hydrogen analyzer output.  While our analyzer provides a faster response than other analyzers & chromatographs, the response time would still be too slow for a standard PID loop.  Our solution uses Emerson’s DeltaV™ PK controller which has a model predictive control (MPC) block built in as a standard option.  This specialized MPC block allows our solution to utilize the hydrogen analyzer signal and provide accurate, closed loop control of the hydrogen concentration.

Natasha Kostenuk serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ayrton Energy, a pioneering company dedicated to the development of groundbreaking LOHC hydrogen technology. In her role, Natasha leads the strategic vision and overall management of the company, driving innovation in the field of hydrogen storage.

Hassan Dehghanpour, Professor and Senior Research Chair in Subsurface Energy Systems, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Alberta


Dr. Hassan Dehghanpour is a professor and Senior Engineering Research Chair in Subsurface Energy Systems in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta (U of A). Building on earlier work in natural gas recycling and carbon dioxide sequestration, Hassan is currently leading a major research program on hydrogen storage in Alberta’s salt caverns supported by Alberta Innovates' Hydrogen Center of Excellence, NSERC, Mitacs, and a consortium of industry partners. His innovative research has attracted investment beyond Alberta for the implementation of hydrogen storage in various regions of Canada.   Hassan has authored more than 170 journal and conference papers related to subsurface energy production and storage, and his outstanding scholarship had been recognized by several prestigious awards in Petroleum Engineering, including the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Young Member Outstanding Service Award in 2014, the SPE Distinguished Achievement for Petroleum Engineering Faculty in 2015, the 2019?20 SPE Distinguished Lecturer. More recently, Hassan’s achievements were recognized by the 2021 Faculty of Engineering Mid-Career Research Award, and with the Imperial Oil University Research Award for two 3-year terms (2017?"22). He has served on the program committee of several SPE conferences, and is currently associate editor of SPE Journal, and the Journal of Geoenergy Science and Engineering. Hassan holds a PhD degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

Grace Quan, President and CEO, Hydrogen in Motion Inc. (H2M)


Grace Quan is CEO and Founder of Hydrogen In Motion Inc. (H2M) which has developed an engineered material that adsorbs hydrogen under the low pressure of 50 bar which then can be desorbed without the need of heat or catalysts just with the pressure swing from 50 bar down to 10 bar. H2M storage systems are one third smaller than 700 bar compressed hydrogen tanks and are significantly cheaper. This material does not use any toxic or rare earth materials and will dramatically reduce the price of hydrogen storage and transportation capital and operating costs.

Tahrim Alam, Senior Metallurgical Engineer, Enbridge Gas Inc.


In his role, Tahrim spearhead the critical task of ensuring compatibility between existing materials and the revolutionary hydrogen blended gas.  With a steadfast dedication to safety and optimal performance, he is working to determine possible initial blend concentration in the entire distribution network, and steps to maximize hydrogen blending ratio considering the current codes & standard regulation. This project is unique in the world in terms of scope and size and will drive sustainable energy practices into the future.

Jacob Appleton, Student, Pickering Highschool


A teenager who's worked with purple sulfur bacteria to invent a new method of producing hydrogen from waste H2S. He's patented the process, published a research white-paper with Ontario Tech's Clean Energy and Innovation Lab, and spoken about it around the world at SXSW, C2 Montreal, and Web Summit. All of this at only the age of 17, he's committing his life to bettering hydrogen, and proven that he can take an important role in it.

ATCO Gas’ Fort Saskatchewan Operating Centre: North America’s First Pure Hydrogen Heated Building and Energy Discovery Centre

ATCO Gas and Pipelines is in the process of commissioning the first 100% hydrogen heated building in North America: the Fort Saskatchewan Operating Centre. Less than two years after commissioning the ATCO Hydrogen Blending Project, ATCO is now pushing the boundaries of pure hydrogen. In collaboration with Gradient Thermal, ATCO funded the development of North America’s first 100% hydrogen boilers which heat the building and are fuelled with hydrogen produced by an onsite electrolyzer. Beyond its primary heating system, the site was designed to be a world-class demonstration space, accelerating the development of technologies using pure hydrogen, and hydrogen to natural gas blends. The building is equipped with eight tailored demonstration bays, each featuring access to a variety of energy mixes and utilities, as well as extensive controls for appliance testing, data acquisition, and safety monitoring. Overall, it is a unique building that will give ATCO, Alberta, and North America a dedicated space to connect technology developers, industry, policymakers, and the public, with the future of hydrogen.

Golu Hydrogen Technologies Inc.


Modular, On-Site, Carbon-Negative Renewable Hydrogen Generation

Gölu-H2 technology allows distributed, decentralized production of Carbon-Negative Renewable Hydrogen with standardized modules. The objectives of Gölu-H2 is to solve the pain points to widespread hydrogen adoption and empower fossil energy users to pivot into renewables and clean energy by using a well-established feedstock integrated into the global energy supply: Ethanol. This readily available input is already used in decarbonizing gasoline and transported using the existing distribution networks in place globally. The pain points and our solution: renewable inputs (We use ethanol and 30X less water than Electrolysis), carbon intensity(CI is Negative, we reduce the carbon-intensity of ethanol by -67gCO2eq/MJ, resulting in negative-carbon hydrogen regardless of the input), and safe distribution/storage(Ethanol is non-toxic, easily stored in standard temperature/pressure tanks). Through Golu’s technology, Ethanol holds 10X the energy of High Compression Hydrogen Gas, over 2X Liquid Hydrogen, and over 1.5X Liquid Ammonia- all with readily available, easily stored and transported Ethanol.  Energy Storage Equivalents:  $80,000 Ethanol storage Tank $50 Million Hydrogen Storage Tanks $1 Billion Batteries.


Inaugural BayoTech Hydrogen Production Hub

BayoTech's proprietary technology empowers small-scale hydrogen production hubs, strategically positioned near demand centers. The successful completion of our inaugural BayoGaaS™ Hydrogen Hub in Wentzville, Missouri, signifies a milestone in providing reliable, cost-effective, and low-carbon hydrogen to industrial gas suppliers, fleet operators, fuel cell equipment manufacturers, and industrial users.


Constellation Hillabee Generating Station Hydrogen Blend Project

In May of 2023, Certarus supplied over 8,500 kg of gaseous green hydrogen, along with precise pressure control for 4 days of hydrogen co-firing into a Siemens Energy SGT6-6000 gas turbine, becoming the largest flow rate of hydrogen fired into a gas turbine at an operating power production facility.  The project proved reliable hydrogen co-firing for the natural gas turbine, up to 38.8% by volume, to reduce emissions and improve operability.  The Certarus mobile pipeline platform enabled hydrogen to be delivered to the Hillabee site and blended in the Siemens turbine safely and reliably.

SFC Energy Equips Mobile Transmission Towers of Deutsche Telekom AG with Hydrogen Fuel Cells

During the German festival season in 2023, a mobile hydrogen fuel cell trailer by SFC Energy was used as a source of temporary power for a mobile communication network during a music festival. At the Nibirii electronic music festival in Dueren, Germany, Deutsche Telekom AG used the H2Genset by SFC Energy as an environmentally friendly power supply for its mobile transmission tower. The H2Genset is an emission-free, flexible and mobile power generator with hydrogen fuel cells for areas without access to the conventional power grid. At the Nibirii Festival, Deutsche Telekom, a mobile base station was 100% powered with green hydrogen in live operation for the first time. This provided reliable cell service to the festival attendees without producing any emissions. The H₂Genset solution allows this type of transmitter masts to be used independently of a stationary power supply, for example at festivals, outdoor events and construction sites as well as in disaster areas. The H₂Genset is an emission-free and self-sufficient power generator that is ideally suited for areas without access to the conventional power grid and can call up a peak power of up to 20 kW. This ensured reliable and stable, mobile communication in the 5G and LTE standards for the approximately 30,000 visitors to the festival.

Colin Armstrong, President and CEO, HTEC


Colin Armstrong, President and CEO, HTEC, is a professional Mechanical Engineer with more than 30 years of experience within the hydrogen industry. He is a driving force behind the development of BC’s hydrogen station network, opening Canada’s first retail hydrogen fueling station in 2018. In addition, under his leadership HTEC has developed and launched BC’s first large-scale project to use hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in the shipping and transportation sectors and has kicked off BC’s first at-scale electrolyser plant dedicated to the transportation sector.   Prior to founding HTEC, Colin led hydrogen initiatives at Sacré-Davey Engineering, including the $21 million Integrated Waste Hydrogen Utilization Project and the 1,000-kilogram-per-day fueling station project for a fleet of fuel cell buses operating in Whistler. Colin was also an investor and the lead engineer at Dynetek Industries (high-pressure carbon fiber gas storage cylinders) and worked at Ballard Power Systems to develop fuel cell manufacturing systems. He serves on the Board of the Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association since 2011 and currently chairs Hydrogen BC.

Patrick Bain is the Director, Hydrogen Projects & Technology Development, for ATCO Gas & Pipelines Ltd. He has held progressively senior roles in the areas of engineering design, project management, personnel leadership, and industry advocacy for the natural gas utility industry. Patrick is responsible for leading a team of experts through the scoping, design, and execution of ATCO’s key hydrogen initiatives, including the Fort Saskatchewan Hydrogen Blending Project, the first commercial pure hydrogen heated building - ATCO's Fort Saskatchewan Operating and Energy Discovery Centre, North America's first pure hydrogen show home - Home One, and the front-end engineering and design study for Bremner, the world's largest pure hydrogen community.

As a Sr. Appliance Engineer, Hydrogen blending, Ryan’s responsibilities include:  - Assessment of end user appliances in the addition of hydrogen - Work with consulting firms to develop recommendations for the adoption of hydrogen - Develop test plans for equipment to determine acceptable limits of hydrogen - Prepare and deliver reports to senior level management - Working with fellow industry leaders to develop plans to assist the industry advancing more quickly - Present ideas to CSA code committees on how to quicken the adoption of hydrogen in code - Develop industry leading plan to determine stratification of hydrogen blends.
